השחף הוא עוף ים, אולם כיום התרגל לחיות ביבשה ונפוץ במקומות מאוכלסי אדם. במחקר שפורסם בשנת 2020 ע"י אונרסיטת אקסטר, נמצא כי שחפים מעדיפים לאכול מזון שהיה במגע עם בני אדם או מאשר שלא היה במגע כזה. אוהבי השחפים ניכנים באצמעות והקפדה על המראה החיצוני .
